For many people, music is a constant part of driving their vehicle. They turn on the radio or stream a playlist every time they get behind the wheel. They may have been doing this for years or even their entire lives.
As such, the choice is not whether or not to listen to music, but what type of music to listen to. What research has found is that the decisions people make can significantly affect the way that they drive.
Their preferred music
First of all, when subjects were allowed to listen to the music that they preferred, they often chose pop or rock music. This tended to be energetic and fast, and they clearly had an emotional connection because they knew the songs and would be tempted to sing along – or, at least, listen more closely to the music itself. This is when they started to make significant driving mistakes. A driver may become distracted by their music or speed up along with music that has a fast tempo.
Slow and calming music
However, the same drivers would often see significant improvement if the playlist was chosen for them. They were given calming, soothing music that did not encourage them to break the speed limit. They were also given instrumental pieces, such as orchestral music, that did not have lyrics for them to focus on. When listening to this type of music, they made far fewer mistakes.
Your rights after a car accident
Naturally, most drivers on the road are listening to their preferred music, and it could lead to a serious car accident. If you suffer injuries, it is important to know what legal options you have to seek financial compensation.
