Not all driving distractions are easy to avoid

Many driving distractions are technically quite easy to avoid. A cellphone is a major distraction if someone is texting and driving, but it can be avoided by turning off the phone. Eating and drinking in the car can also be distracting, but this can be prevented by eating at a restaurant or waiting until you get home.

As such, when people cause distracted driving accidents, it is often inferred that they were doing something dangerous on purpose. Someone who is texting knows that it is dangerous but decides to do so anyway.

While this is true for many distractions, it is not true for all. For example, some studies have noted that daydreaming is one of the top causes of driver distraction, and it can happen without warning or any active decision by the driver.

Driving can become boring

One potential reason for daydreaming in the car is simply that driving itself becomes routine and boring. Young drivers are keenly aware of the complexities of the task, and it can feel frightening and overwhelming. But for someone who has been driving for decades—perhaps performing the same commute five times per week—driving can become a mind-numbing task. That is when the mind begins to seek out distractions, and a wandering mind can take someone’s attention away from operating the vehicle.

Have you been injured in an accident caused by one of these distracted drivers? If so, be sure you know how to seek fair financial compensation. This can help to cover the cost of medical bills, lost wages and much more.
