How to choose a safe motorcycle as a beginner

| Oct 15, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

If you are thinking about buying your first motorcycle in North Carolina, you will know they have many advantages over cars. They are cheaper to run and maintain. They are quicker through congested roads, take up less road space, pollute less and can bring a massive smile to your face, even when commuting to work.

However, you will also know that you are more at risk on two wheels than behind the wheel of a car. To enjoy the benefits of motorcycling, you need to stay safe. One of the things you can do to improve your safety is to choose the right motorcycle. Here are some things to consider when buying your first bike:

  • Your ability: Becoming a skilled motorcyclist takes time. Do not buy a high-powered motorcycle until you have the experience to handle it, which usually takes years to gain, not months.
  • Maintenance: Whatever you ride, it needs to be in good working order. Faulty lights could leave you invisible if riding at night. Worn brake pads take longer to stop you and worn tires have less traction. If buying a used bike, ensure you get it checked by an experienced mechanic. If buying new, be sure to keep up to date with the manufacturer’s service schedule.
  • Safety features: Modern bikes come with increased safety features such as anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and improved lighting. Classic bikes can be great fun but may not have these.

Choosing the right motorcycle, riding it well and wearing protective clothing are vital to staying safe. However, it only takes one negligent driver to cause you to crash. If injured in a collision with another vehicle in North Carolina, seek legal help to claim compensation.
