What is the root cause of most wrong way accidents?

When you look at wrong-way accidents, you will find a variety of different causes. The reason may depend on the specific situation or on the driver.

For example, a very young driver may end up going the wrong way because they do not have much experience behind the wheel and simply get confused. They may not realize they have made a mistake right away. On the other side of the spectrum, an elderly driver could also make an error due to mental decline or confusion, causing mistakes they might not have made when they were younger.

That said, these are relatively minor cases. Studies consistently find that most wrong way accidents happen because of alcohol use.

The role of impairment

This becomes clear when looking at how these crashes occur. In many cases, they happen on interstate highways, where there are numerous signs and road designs intended to prevent wrong-way driving. The fact that it still occurs shows that drivers are often so impaired that they either do not see the signs or do not realize they used the wrong ramp.

Additionally, many wrong-way accidents take place late at night or in the early morning hours. This is when impaired drivers are most likely heading home after a night of drinking. That is not to say that wrong-way accidents cannot occur in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday, but they are far more common at 2:00 AM on a Saturday.
