Anyone who’s driven knows that they should follow the posted and implied speed limits, but some may not realize why this is important. In order to understand why following speed limits is important, it’s necessary to know why they’re set the way they are.

All speed limits are the maximum speed that’s considered safe for the applicable stretch of road. It’s based on the road conditions being perfect, so the maximum safe speed is going to be lower if it’s raining or if there are other adverse conditions on the road.

Type of speed limit matters

There are several different types of speed limits that are used on roadways. These include statutory, posted, work zone, school zone, advisory and variable. Each of these serves a different purpose, but drivers must comply with them all if the roads are going to remain safe.

Drivers who are speeding won’t be able to react to situations on the roadway. It may be impossible for them to stop their vehicle safely. It’s also possible that speeding will make it impossible for them to keep the vehicle under control and on the roadway.

Speeding drivers can cause catastrophic crashes that require considerable medical care for the victims. Those victims may opt to pursue a claim for compensation to help cover the costs of the crash that was due to the negligence of the speeding driver. These cases must be handled in a short time because of the statute of limitations, so it’s beneficial to work with someone who’s familiar with getting this done.
